After you use your High-Speed Data, you continue to have unlimited Standard Data, which may result in slower speeds. What is High-Speed Data and unlimited Standard Data?
Your unlimited data service plan comes with a set amount of High-Speed Data. Once you use your High-Speed Data, you still have access to unlimited Standard Data. Your unlimited Standard Data may be prioritized behind other customers when the network is in congestion, which will result in slower speeds. No matter how much unlimited Standard Data you use, you’ll never be cut off or charged more than your plan’s monthly service fee.
What happens if I run out of High-Speed Data?
If you use all of your High-Speed Data during a billing period, you will automatically be switched over to using your unlimited Standard Data. No matter how much Standard Data you use, you won’t be cut off or automatically charged for more data. Standard Data may give you a slower connection when the network is congested. If you’d like to continue using High-Speed Data, you have the ability to add more to your plan if you want a little boost before the end of your billing period.
If I have unlimited data, why would I need more?
Similar to many cellphone plans, most Viasat’s unlimited data plans come with unlimited Standard Data and a limited amount of High-Speed Data. If you use all of that High-Speed Data, you still have unlimited Standard Data. The only change you may notice will occur if the network is congested; then your speeds may be slowed. If that happens, you may want to buy more High-Speed Data.
What are some other reasons I might want to buy additional High-Speed Data?
If you’re on the right plan for your needs, you shouldn’t need to buy more data every month. But in some circumstances, even a temporarily slower connection may not be desirable.
Typically, our customers only by more data when they’re close to exceeding their High-Speed Data amount for the month. Some other reasons might include:
- You have a particularly heavy work or school project that’s requiring more time online than usual
- Guests are visiting and more devices than usual are connecting to your network
- There’s a new sci-fi movie out that you’d like to stream in HD
How much does more High-Speed Data cost?
You can buy 5 GBs for $9.99 (lowest price) or 10 GBs for $14.99 (best value). And you can buy more High-Speed Data as many times as you’d like.
Be aware that any unused additional data will expire at the end of your current bill cycle and won’t carry over to the following month.
What can I do with 5 GBs of data?
With 5 GBs of data, you’ll be able to stream approximately three average movies at DVD quality (typically 480p) on phones, tablets, laptops, and small screen TVs.
What can I do with 10 GBs of data?
With 10 GBs of data, you’ll be able to stream approximately seven average movies at DVD quality (typically 480p) on phones, tablets, laptops, and small screen TVs.
How do I add more High-Speed Data to my plan?
You can buy more High-Speed Data on the MyViasat website. Once you’re logged in, click the buy more data link on the left side of the Plan & Usage page and choose the amount of data you’d like to purchase.

Yes, it will be immediately available.
