Pertussis cases are rising—check your family’s vaccinations

August 22, 2024 – FYI

The Juneau Public Health Center wants you to be aware that pertussis (also known as “whooping cough”) is on the rise in Juneau and across the state. Pertussis is a very contagious respiratory illness which causes severe and long-lasting coughing. People with pertussis can have intense coughing that lasts for weeks or months. It can be fatal in infants, the elderly, and those with immunocompromising conditions.

The best way to protect yourself and your family against pertussis is with the DTaP or Tdap vaccination (depending on age). You can check your family’s vaccination records using the Docket phone app or website app.

If you believe you or your child has pertussis, or have been exposed, it’s important to see your healthcare provider right away to get tested and started on antibiotics.

For questions about pertussis, testing, treatment, or vaccination, contact your healthcare provider or call the Juneau Public Health Center at (907) 465-3353.
