Key traffic figures July 2022
In July 2022, 2’518’977 passengers passed through Zurich Airport, corresponding to an increase of 85% compared to last year. Passenger levels are 80% of those reached in July 2019.
In July, the number of local passengers was 1’799’137. Transfer passengers amounted to 28%, equal to 713’196 passengers.
Year on year, air traffic movements increased by 42% to 21’647 take offs or landings. A monthly comparison shows that air traffic movements are at 80% of the 2019 level. The average passenger per movement figure increased to 140 (+20% vs. previous year). The average seat load factor was at 85% (+16 percentage points vs. previous year).
A total of 35’941 tons of freight were transported at Zurich Airport during the month of July. This led to an increase in freight volume of 13% compared to last year. Compared to July 2019, freight volume decreased by 5%.
Review of the summer holiday operation
The month of July marked the start of the peak season at Zurich Airport.
Overall, we are satisfied with the summer holiday operations, which ran operationally without any major incidents. All employees are doing their best every day to provide passengers with the smoothest possible travel experience," said Stefan Tschudin, Chief Operation Officer of Flughafen Zürich AG. "However, after two years of pandemic, it is also clear that it is challenging to get operations back on track to handle between 70,000 to 90,000 passengers a day. Internationally, too, it takes some time for air traffic to readjust after this crisis.
Many passengers arrive at the airport very early, sometimes up to six hours before departure. "This is not necessary and can put additional strain on peak times and lead to unnecessary waiting times in front of check-in counters that are still closed. Two to three hours before departure is sufficient and prevents such situations," says Tschudin. Important here: to look up the check-in opening times and, if possible, use the evening-before check-in. "In this case, arriving two hours before departure is sufficient," says Tschudin.
31 July marked the peak day since the outbreak of the pandemic with around 92,000 passengers traveling through Zurich Airport.
