Welcome to REA, Anton Wintergerst

Published on Read in 3 mins

In our new People of REA blog series, we’re chatting to and welcoming newbies by finding out a little more about their career experience and what brought them to REA.

We recently caught up with Anton Wintergerst, Senior Technical Lead, who has joined us from SEEK and works in our Customer Product & Experience Team. He shares a little about himself and his career story “in reverse” as well as his passion for teaching computer science to Year 8’s.

What attracted you to REA?

I joined REA to further my experience as a leader in tech. I’m a big believer in people and the more I learned about REA the more I realised this was the place for me. The culture of learning is unlike anything I’ve experienced before and it will be something that keeps me here for a long time to come.

Tell us about your career background?

I’ve had an unusual career in the sense that was a bit in reverse. By that, I mean it’s much more common to start out in a large company, move into consulting and then into a start-up. Whereas I started my own business, then moved to consulting, through a digital agency and onto large companies.

The business I started at the beginning of my career was a 3D visualisation business to help Architects and Property Developers sell properties off the plan. We created anything from the CG renders printed and shown on billboards in front of homes to virtual suburbs that could be explored with touch screens we installed in the display homes of brand-new developments. It was difficult to get this off the ground, so I took up a part time sales job to make ends meet.

Later, I moved to Isobar, a digital agency, and worked with some incredibly talented people and with a lot of exciting clients. It was here I learned the importance of designing for people and the great value iteration brings to the customer experience.

Looking back, I feel quite privileged to have had so many great experiences!

What was your previous role?

My previous role was a Principal Developer at SEEK where I worked with several teams to deliver customer facing reporting. I also had the opportunity to work with SEEK Learning and help guide people find a pathway into a career. Being a part of these teams, I discovered the power of empathy and how that mindset would help improve my own working life.

What are you looking forward to most in your new role?

In my new role at REA, I’m most looking forward to working with people to deliver on the company vision of changing the way people experience property. It’s this shared vision that is full of empathy that really drives me to move through challenges and deliver real value to our customers and consumers.

Leading change is a team sport and I’m incredibly excited by the collaboration that I’ve been a part of at REA from day one. Working together with other teams, we are innovating across the entire life-cycle of the property market. There’s a lot of exciting work happening here!

What is your superpower?

I would like to think that my superpower is teaching. That is certainly my ambition. I’m currently teaching Computer Science to Year 8 students part-time as part of the CS in Schools program. It’s a fantastic opportunity to help the next generation make the most of the tech powered world we find ourselves inhabiting.

Welcome to REA, Anton. We are excited to have you on board!
