Celebrating 25 years of Private Equity at Allianz!

Alternative Assets are an important pillar of the Allianz investment universe. They make up 21% (FY2020) of total investments and include Private Equity, Private Debt, Infrastructure and Real Estate. In November 1996, Allianz made its first private equity fund investment. Since 1996, Allianz Capital Partners has made over 500 investments in funds worldwide and has established relations with over 200 fund managers. Today, Allianz is one of the largest private equity investors and the largest one among insurers globally*, having grown its assets under management in this area six fold over the last decade. Private Equity is an important part of the alternative investment strategy of Allianz and has successfully managed to navigate several crises be it the New Economy bubble in 2000, the financial crisis in 2008 and most recently the Corona pandemic. Allianz has been a consistent investor in the asset class, even during the challenging year of 2020 when Allianz invested EUR 3bn in private equity funds globally.

In 1996, the Munich investment office was founded, followed by the New York office in 2002 and the Singapore office in 2007. During this quarter century, the ACP team has helped to build a balanced global portfolio, based on diversification across geographies, sectors, managers and vintage years. This has been achieved through primary and secondary commitments and the use of co-investments. The portfolio is equally split across Europe, Asia and the Americas. This work was also crowned with a range of industry recognitions over the years, most recently with an award by Private Equity Exchange for the “Best Global LP Strategy > USD 10bn” at the end of 2020.

The most recent development in this anniversary year is the newly launched strategy that provides institutional clients with the opportunity to invest together with Allianz in its global private equity program (click here  to read press release).

“Private Equity investments are an integral part of Allianz´s investment strategy, having generated stable and solid returns. With their long investment horizon, they are a good match with the long-term investment liabilities of Allianz insurance companies. Over the last 25 years, we have expanded our private equity investments and look forward to many more successful investments in this area with our esteemed colleagues at Allianz Global Investors/ Allianz Capital Partners. Congratulations to the team!”, says Carsten Quitter, Chief Investment Officer, Allianz Group.

The global private equity industry can also play an important role in tackling climate change. Just recently, Allianz Capital Partners joined Initiative Climat International (iCI), an initiative of leading private equity investors who strive to support the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Happy Quarter of a Century, Allianz!
